Today is Valentine’s Day, the day that the martyr St. Valentine is celebrated after he secretly married couples in Rome during Claudius’ reign when he absolved all marriages so men would in the military. He also helped Christians escape prison and fell in love with a jailer’s daughter whom he signed a letter to with the words “From your Valentine.” St. Valentine was put to death, but St. Valentine was seen as a heroic figure in England and France and then in 498 AD Pope Gelasius announced that February 14th would be a day to honor St. Valentine. However, Valentine’s Day also celebrates the love and appreciation people have for each other just like the love St. Valentine had for the people he helped.
