Christmas Memories: You have the Son, You have it all

Christmas is coming quickly and that means that another Christmas memory is due.        One year my family and I went to a family friend's play. The play was about an affluent father who collects art and his son. The father loves his son very much, but one day his son is drafted into the military. Unfortunately, the father finds out that his son dies during the war and hears how appreciated he was. The father later gets a painting done of his son. The father dies sometime after. After his death an auction is held for all of the art that he collected over time. Many collectors are interested in the art, however as is stated in the will, the first piece to go must be the painting of his son. No one wants to buy the painting, but a friend of his son arrives. The friend decides to purchase the painting when it is reveled that the one who gets the son, gets it all!       The play is a nice reminder to what is truly important ...

Realistic Winter Bucketlist

Every year I have many plans for winter, but never complete them, so this year I have a realistic winter bucket list accompanied with my unrealistic bucket list to the left. Go to the Zoo lights with Friends: See friends got to Zoo lights on Instagram Go to the Denver Botanical Gardens Blossoms of Light: See friends go to Blossoms of Light on Instagram. Play in Snow: Trudge through Snow. Sled: Whine because snow got in my boots. Ski: Look at ski clothing online. Go to Aspen: Plan trip to Aspen, but not go. Go to Crested Butte: Ask and ask dad, but be denied because he doesn't want to be cold. Have Birthday in Crested Butte: Have Birthday in Casa Bonita Bake Cookies for Santa: Eat cookies for Santa. Wrap presents perfectly: They will be Perfect. Enjoy every moment: Whine because I didn't get the presents I wanted.  Go to Christmas Eve Mass with all my loves!: Will Happen.  Drive Lance to School: Be told I can never drive again.  Watch lots of Christmas Movie...

Christmas Memories: Eww

Its Friday, which means another Christmas Memory! For Christmas Eve my family and I put out a sandwich for Santa Claus, because he must get tired of cookies. The first year we did this we set out the cookies, the sandwich, and the reindeer carrots. We went to bed and the next morning we woke up. We went to the living room to see what gifts Santa has brought us. As I was walking towards my stocking I stepped in something slimy. It was Santa's mayonnaise covered lettuce! Eww! I was not happy about this and avoided it the rest of the day. God Bless

18 going on 88

Since I have begun college I have found myself with a lot of time on my hands and I think I am turning in to an 80 year old. One day, I didn’t think I had anything to do, so I took the time to get the newspaper and do the crossword puzzle. I’ve always enjoyed crossword puzzles, but have never had the time to do them. I usually do a crossword a day. It keeps the mind young. I’ve also taken up solitaire. I also have been into bird watching (I can identify Canadian Goose and Duck). I like to walk by the pond and watch the geese and ducks. I like to name them too. Usually, the names are Quacktherine and Duckstin Bieber.   I’ve told my therapist about this and he said that I’m doing better than most people. I’m not drinking, or doing drugs, or anything. So, that’s good. Well, good night, its 5:30 and time for me to go to sleep!

Christmas Memories: Forgotten at the Pool

Since, I didn't do last week's Christmas Memory post, here it is this week.  Some of the most memorable times at Christmas are centered around the pool. I have been having swim practices during Christmas for many years. One year was incredibly fun in the pool during Christmas! I had a late night swim practice and was sick, but I needed to swim. Anyways, the swim practice ended around 10-11pm. As parents were picking up their daughters and my friends were going home, my dad was still not there! I had checked multiple times outside, but to no avail. My phone was also dead, so I could not contact my family. Thankfully, some teammates and the coach waited with me. One of my teammates offered her phone to call my family. They picked up and I finally got to figure out what was happening. It went a little like this “Hi Mom, did Dad forget to pick me up?” “Oh, Shit!” she said drowsily. “Ooh, He fell asleep waiting (to get you)” “Oh can you wake him up to get me?” “...

Christmas Memories: Baptist and Breakfast

Once again it is time to spread Christmas Cheer.  One year during Christmas time my family and I went to a Baptist Church for their music program. Lance was playing guitar at the time and his guitar teacher was a musician in the program and invited us to come. We went and the pastor welcomed everyone as it began. The music was so beautiful and joyful, without a flaw. It played on and on. There were also narrators. I thought their words were recorded, but they weren’t! It was so perfect. The time went on and on and I wondered when the pastor would speak. The program ended and the pastor didn’t speak, it was just a beautiful music program. Afterwards, my family and I went to Mimi’s café and had breakfast. Nowadays, we sometimes go to the music program, because it is such a warming time.  God Bless!

Guest Post: Boys, Friendships, and Knowing who You are by Harriet Alove

I invited a close friend of mine to write a post about whatever she desired. Harriet Alove (pen name) reflects on boys and finding who she is while in college.  ------------------------------             Much like Katherine since I have been at college I have noticed a lot of new different things. I am no longer coddled by the Jesuits, no more Kairos, no more of my sisters passing me in the hallways while I’m having a meltdown during class and having them sit and talk with me ‘till I feel better. Going to one of the largest state universities in the country has truly shell shocked me. Having ‘theology of the body’ as the most of a sex ed class I’ve had, to oddly having more knowledge about Myer’s Briggs types thanks to Mr. Cook’s junior theology. However, what has shocked me the most is how lost I have felt about myself. I’m no longer a swimmer, a good old Catholic girl going to ...

Christmas Memories: Baby Jesus, Big Cross

One Christmas Eve, my family and I went to Church and at the end of the service the youth group put on a skit. They had “Mary did you know?” playing and a man holding a baby. Then, one group transported a large cross while the baby and man walked under it. It was like Woah that’s Jesus! He was a baby and then died on the Cross, like woah! For our sins! That was a nice end of Christmas Eve service!

Christmas Memories: The Nativity

Another Week Another TWO Christmas memories, since I couldn’t think of one last week.   One year, my family and I went to the Christmas Eve Church Service as usual. As we drove over we prepared for another skit with adults talking about the Bible over coffee. But, this time as we took our beloved second row there was a real life nativity! There were animals, people, props, and even a real baby! They played out Jesus’ birth and wowed us! We could even pet the animals afterward. It was a great time!

Christmas Memories: It's the Thought that Counts

Every week until Christmas I will share a Christmas memory to fill everyone with joy and cheer.        One year for Christmas (when I was much younger) I needed to get my dad a gift, so I decided on underwear, because I thought it was funny. However this was not normal underwear, but a pair I would sew myself. I gathered together a pair of my dad's underwear from his drawer, some black cotton fabric we had, and glow in the dark thread. I began by laying out my dad's underwear and matching the length of the band to the fabric and cut. I attempted to match the pair of underwear, regarding the pattern. I also decided to sew on either "Merry Christmas Daddy" or just "Daddy," I don't remember, once again in glow in the dark thread.  I began to sew  (luckily, I made the pattern in a way that required me to ony sew one side and the legs) with the glow in the dark thread and was finished! How nice to receive a personalized pair of underwear from your daught...

Parking Day

Since, I am officially majoring in interior design we have lots of creative projects. One of the most fun projects that we have had is Parking Day.         Parking Day comes from the idea that a parking space is an area that you can rent for a few hours, however the item inside the space can be anything, its just that people typically put cars in there. With this information we were challenged to create an opportunity for positive social engagement inside of a parking space.         We were each assigned a group and theme, ours was Education. After a failed attempt my group and I settled on educating people on Japanese artist, Yayoi Kusama. Kusama works heavily in art involving dots. One of her displays, Obliteration Room, is a white room and people are encouraged to place multicolor stickers all over the room. We recreated this by having a pop up tent with white table cloths stretched over two sides to create a corne...

What I've Learned in College

As I have recently began college I have had quite the culture shock. These are things that I've learned while here, but are not usually discussed.  1. Not everyone is a Gentleman        In high school, I would play a game with myself when I was in the boys division. I would see how long I could go without having to touch a door. All the young men would open them for me and once I even had a teacher apologize on behalf of some young men that failed to hold the door open for me. This game is no longer easy to play because boys (notice how I didn't use young men) do not open the door. When did it become the norm to not open a door for a young women? I even had a dad open the door for me, as his son continued walking. The young men that do open the door I always make sure to thank as I genuinely am appreciative of their effort. No, I don't have high expectations, I just know what I deserve. 2. Don't go to Wal-Mart after 9pm        Last ...
